Sheridan Police Department Chief Travis Koltiska and Captain Tom Ringley spoke on events planning in the City of Sheridan and the role of the SPD during these events.

The SPD Chief said it is best practice to begin planning as early as possible. The City’s role involves issuing permits. These events are sponsored and hosted by third party entities as the City itself does not hold or host large special events.

According to Koltiska, planning early allows organizers the opportunity to identify potential problems that may arise as well as allow ample time to inform the surrounding neighbors or businesses of the intended event. Many events may require an insurance bond, which will also take time to acquire. Consulting with the SPD may raise issues of public safety that can be addressed and corrected or mitigated. Should the event be large (attracting a large number of people) or long enough, the SPD will also take measures to ensure enough officers are scheduled to both cover the event and maintain the proper level of policing throughout the city.

The SPD Captain said major events have included the Dead Swede bike event and the Big Horn Mountain Trail Run taking place this weekend June 20-21, as well the recurring events such as the first 3rd Thursday of the year.

To ensure safety and alcohol compliance, it is the duty of the SPD to make sure events are safe for patrons to enjoy as well as to ensure all laws are followed. This requires “walk throughs” by SPD officers who, according to the Chief, would rather not have to arrest or cite anyone at or organizing the event.
